DPG-PFAND, what is it?

DPG-PFAND stands for refundable deposit in German. DPG-PFAND is the recycling system for bottles and cans in Germany. When consumers buy bottles and cans, for example in the supermarket, they pay a deposit on top of the existing price of the product.

Mandatory in Germany

Since 2003, a deposit requirement has been in force in Germany for single-use drinks packagings. The Pfand logo (the deposit logo) must be applied to all disposable packaging, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

Single use Bottles and cans

As the name suggests, the above products are consumed only once. The environmental impact of these products is therefore greater than for packaging that can be used several times. Cans and bottles that are generally used only once and therefore fall under the "Single use Bottles and cans" are:

  • Less strong plastic bottles
  • Cans

The deposit for the bottles and cans is always 25 cents.

We are certified

Not every printing company is allowed to apply the deposit logos. These so-called Pfand logos, provided with a special ink, may only be applied by a limited number of certified printing companies, including member companies of Optimum Group™
